Oh my today was a day for changes and a realization that I had gone through poetry analysis way too fast on Monday. After walking into a room full of students this morning who had lots of questions, I decided it was time to take a couple of steps back and revisit poetry analysis. In your class we were able to look at one and half poems which should have given you a better understanding of how to look at a poem. Always remember to think outside the box when looking at poetry, not everything is black and white. I asked you to revisit the poems again tonight and tomorrow to help you prepare for the poetry analysis on the final exam.
Speaking of the final exam, that has been moved to Tuesday, 11/14. Tomorrow we will look at Hyperbole and Idiom to finish up the unit. On Friday, we may do a little more poetry analysis just to make sure we understand and to see if we can identify the poetic elements and the figurative language. HW: Your study guide is due on Friday, 11/10 See below if you have lost or misplaced yours. (All you have to complete for the study guide are the definitions and examples. We completed the poetry analysis in class on Monday. ) 1._poetry_test_review.pdf

Oh my what a busy Monday. The Poetry Unit final is scheduled for this Friday, 11/10, and we are working feverishly to get through the last of the material. Today, we practiced poetry analysis, in other words, taking everything we have learned over the past several weeks and applied it to poems as a whole. For HW, you have 4 poems to analyze. I am attaching a sample notebook paper of how you should set up your paper for each of the poems. Remember you have to answer all questions for all poems. Also, do not do anything with the Hyperbole and Idiom sheets; those are for class on Wednesday.
Don't forget to complete your study guide. It could mean the difference between an A and an F especially if you really study it and practice the analysis. If you can't find your Elements of Poetry notes to help you complete the study guide, all of the PPT's we have had to this point are on last Friday's blog, 11/3. You will have hyperbole and idiom on Wednesday, but you did study these in ELA, so you should have some kind of an idea what they are. Enjoy your day off, and I will see you on Wednesday. poetry_analysis_sample_notebook_paper_answer_sheet.docx 3._poetry_analysis_poems.pdf 2._poetry_analysis_practice_questions.pdf Reminder, your "Extended Family Metaphor" is due on Monday. We will begin sharing these on Monday. If you didn't have your assignment completed on Monday, it will be considered one day late and drop one letter grade for every day that it is late. If you have lost your materials, you can find everything you need on yesterday's post.
We worked on a personification worksheet in class today. It is not homework if you did not finish. You will have few (very few minutes) to complete on Monday. Your final for the poetry unit is next Friday, 11/10. You will receive a study guide, if you feel like you need one on Monday. However, in preparation for the final, if you haven't completed the Elements of Poetry note sheet, that would be a good place to start. I am attaching the note sheet along with all of the PPT's that we have used to complete the sheet. This should help you complete what you missed. I'm also attaching the personification worksheet from today in case you are missing that. 2._personification_handout.pdf 1._personification.pptx 1._simile_and_metaphors.pptx 1._imagery_intro.pptx 1._onomatopoeia_.pptx 1._poetry_structure.pptx 1._extended_metaphor.pptx 1._alliteration__.ppt 2._poetic_elements_notes.pdf We were very busy in class today. First, you had 15 minutes of silent reading. Then if you hadn't completed your Simile/Metaphor worksheet you were given 15 minutes to do that. And finally, you started working on your Family Extended Metaphor. You received the rubric and a piece of drawing paper for your final copy. The poem is to be either hand written (neatly and not in pencil) or typed an glued to the drawing paper where you will draw the pictures that relate to the metaphors in your poem. The rubric is your blueprint read it to make sure you are doing everything correctly. I am attaching the file for the rubric, the instruction sheet and a computer generated example of what a final copy might look like. Remember, your pictures must be hand drawn. Your final copy is due at the beginning of class on Monday, 11/6.
I will be available at 8:15 tomorrow morning if you need help or just want to come to my room to work. extended_metaphor_check_list_rubric_2.docx computer_generated_example_of_extended_metaphor_final_copy.docx 2._extended_metaphor.pdf It is hard to believe that today is November 1st. It seems like we just started school a couple of weeks ago. This year is flying.
In class today, we started working on Extended Metaphors by looking at different poems that are considered extended metaphors. You also received an assignment to write an extended metaphor for your family. We will work on the rough draft in class tomorrow. Your final copy is due on Monday, 11/6. I will give you the paper and the rubric for this assignment tomorrow. I am also attaching the PPT if you need to look at it for help. Please take tonight off you don't have any HW. However, you need to bring a book to class tomorrow. We will have silent reading at the beginning of class. My bookshelf will be closed; you have to bring your own book or you will be considered coming to class unprepared. 1._extended_metaphor.pptx |
